Having seen Kinky Boots multiple times, with various actors in the lead roles, it was fun to go back for a third time to see Jake Shears, who I didn't know much about, assume the role of Charlie and to see Kirstin Maldonado, who I'm a fan of because of Pentatonix, assume the role of Lauren. It was also lovely to see J. Harrison Ghee return to the role of Lola after I saw him last summer alongside Brendon Urie.
Jake Shears seems to have really embraced the role of Charlie Price. He brings a different attitude than Brendon Urie and Stark Sands did, but her is quite the actor and does have a good voice. However, his ascent into falsetto at points did not seem to fit well with the music, making me wonder why those notes weren't taken down for him.
Kirstin Maldonado's rendition of "The History of Wrong Guys" is one of the best I've ever heard. While I am obviously partial to the others I have seen in the part, and to Annaleigh Ashford on the original cast recording, Maldonado's rendition is wonderful. She gets fully into character throughout the entire show and she is a wonderful fit for the part.
The show as a whole remains a standout among the relatively longer running shows on Broadway. It began previews over 5 years ago and has been spreading love to audiences since. It is another feel-good show that lets the audience have a fun time, while delivering a good message: "You change the world when you change your mind". Everyone can learn from that message, no matter how young or old they are.
Jake Shears will remain in the show until April 1st, while Kirstin Maldonado has extended her run until April 26th and will be with Wayne Brady as Lola who started on March 5th and will depart on the same day as Kirstin. I would recommend seeing any of them in the show, and I can promise that you will have an amazing time.
